When I created Vail of the Mist, I wanted to work with silence. Everything in this painting stays inside soft greys, silver and white, with only small touches of blush pink and gold, because I wanted the textures to speak more than the colors. The upper part moves freely, like mist or the surface of stone seen from above, with small cells and white blooms opening across it as if something is slowly breaking through.
Then the painting changes. From the right side, layered folds rise and sweep down across the canvas. They are raised and sculpted, so they catch the light and throw real shadows. For me they are like a veil being lifted, or wind moving across snow, the moment when a calm surface starts to shift. Below them the ground is rough and heavy, and in the lower corner small white pearls spill out like foam at the edge of a wave.
I love how this piece looks different through the day, because the light keeps changing the shadows in the folds. It is made for a space that needs calm, a quiet grey that still feels alive when you come closer.
