Some works stay with you for years before you finally pick up a brush. The Ancient of Days by William Blake is one of them. Blake created it in 1794 as the opening image of his book Europe a Prophecy, and more than two centuries later it still carries the same power. This is my hand-painted reproduction of his work, made with deep respect for the original.
The figure is Urizen, Blake’s symbol of reason and law, kneeling inside a burning sun and reaching down into the darkness with a compass, as if measuring and shaping the world. What always moved me is the tension in that moment. His white hair and beard are pulled by a strong wind, his body is bent with effort, and the whole universe seems to wait for the line he is about to draw. I worked on the golden circle and the fiery light around it slowly, layer by layer, so the glow would really rise out of the black background. The clouds, with their crimson and violet edges, frame the scene like the edge of a storm.
Painting a reproduction is a different kind of creating. You do not invent, you listen. Every stroke was a small conversation with Blake, trying to understand why he placed the light where he did and how he made a single arm feel so powerful. For me this piece is about creation itself, the moment when order is born out of darkness, and it is my way of honoring an artist who never stopped searching for the meaning behind what we see.
